Congratulations to Heather, you are the first NICU Superhero of 2020!
03 January 2020
Welcome to 2020! Let's kick off the new year with another nomination for our NICU Superhero Award!
Today's nomination comes from Emilie's mum Debbie Calder. Emilie was born prematurely and spent 3 months in the neonatal intensive care unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital before being discharged in October. Shortly after Emilie arrived home, Debbie contacted us to share her story and her thanks for a special member of staff on the unit who helped her through her neonatal journey. Here is what Debbie told us about her experience in the NICU:
"I would like to nominate Heather Gilbert from Aberdeen Neonatal Unit as my NICU Superhero. My daughter Emilie was born at 24 weeks gestation and was discharged from hospital 2 weeks ago after a 94 day stay.
Heather was amazing throughout our extensive time in neonatal, she always had a smile on her face and was so warm and friendly, she went above the call of duty. As well as providing amazing care to Emilie, she was so supportive and always had time to chat and make sure that I was ok when I was finding things difficult and feeling overwhelmed.
Knowing Heather was on shift and caring for Emilie really made my day and I actually miss seeing her now we’re home! Thank you so much Heather for everything you did for us!"
Congratulations to Heather! It sounds like you did a fantastic job caring for Emilie and helping Debbie through those rough months. Emilie is doing really well now and you can see Debbie’s precious photos of her from her time in the neonatal unit and now, here. Debbie tells us that she is really proud of how far Emilie has come, a real little fighter.
